The occupation: its four periods

In the permanent exhibition the period of occupation has been divided into four periods. ‘Stage sets’ and wall-to-wall photographs (by photographer A. Hustinx) show how the Netherlands became impoverished and the atmosphere more grim in the course of the years of occupation.

Periods
The periods - introduced by a banner - begin or end with an important turning point, where the visitors literally turn a corner: the February Strike, the April/May strikes, the allied invasion of Normandy. On the map every period has its own color.

Every period has it's own color

Main route
The main route illustrates the experiences of the majority of the Dutch population. The side-rooms deal with specific groups and themes. The subjects explored here in more detail are not strictly linked to the chronological order of the main route.

Banner
Every period is introduced by a banner linking the developments in warfare with the development of resistance in the Netherlands.
